The Time Leaks That Make You Run Behind-Full Guide

If you feel like you’re always running behind, it’s probably not your service time. It’s everything happening in between.

The small things that don’t feel like a big deal in the moment… but add up throughout the day. We call these time leaks.

The break room conversation

This is one of the biggest ones. You go back to mix color, get caught in a conversation, and suddenly 10 minutes is gone.

It doesn’t feel like a lot, but it throws off your entire flow. Your client is waiting, your next appointment is coming in, and now you’re trying to catch up all day.

Talking without working

We are in a relationship-based industry, so conversation matters. But if you’re stopping your hands every time you talk, you’re slowing yourself down.

You have to learn how to do both. Work while you talk. Stay engaged, but stay moving. If that’s hard in the beginning, let your client do most of the talking while you stay focused on the service.

No setup system

Walking into every appointment unprepared is another major time leak. If you’re grabbing tools as you go, going back and forth, or figuring things out mid-service, you’re losing minutes constantly.

That’s why we always recommend having a setup system. Know what you’re doing before your client sits down, have everything ready, and stay on task.

Small leaks, big impact

None of these things feel like a big problem on their own. But stacked together, they’re the reason you feel rushed, behind, and overwhelmed.

When you clean up the small leaks, everything else starts to feel easier. You’re more in control, your day flows better, and your clients feel it.

Closing Thought

When you remove time leaks, you create space. More control over your schedule, less stress throughout your day, and more consistency in how you show up for your clients.

A lot of that comes down to systems and setup. We’ve always believed that the way you’re set up behind the chair should support your efficiency, not work against it.

That’s a big part of why we’ve created the tools we use every day in our own salon work. Because when your setup works with you, everything else flows better.
